Hey movie buffs! Are you ready for a cinematic journey through the breathtaking countryside of Yorkshire? As a die-hard fan of TV shows and films, we know the thrill of visiting filming locations. So, join us as we explore the most popular filming locations in Yorkshire, from the Witcher and Bridgerton to Emmerdale and Dark River.
Yorkshire’s countryside is a movie director’s dream come true, with its rolling hills, stunning moorland, and picturesque villages. Its natural beauty and diverse landscapes make it the go-to location for many filmmakers, and it’s no surprise that some of the most popular TV shows and films have been shot here.
Let’s start with The Witcher, the epic Netflix series that has taken the world by storm. The opening fight scene of the series takes place in the village of Blaviken, which was filmed in the beautiful village of Haxby. Other Witcher filming locations in Yorkshire include the historic town of York, which provided the backdrop for many scenes, and the picturesque village of Danby, which was used for the forest scenes. Another fantastic Netflix series we’ve been able to enjoy recently was the period drama Bridgerton! If you loved the setpieces on show and the gorgeous countryside, then you’ll love exploring Yorkshire’s filming locations for this series. The historic town of York was used for the show’s ballroom scenes, while the picturesque village of Castle Howard served as the exterior of the Bridgerton family home.
The BBC has offered us many wonderful series filmed in Yorkshire over the years, starting with the recent and popular period drama Gentleman Jack. Shibden Hall in Halifax, Anne Lister’s home, was the primary filming location, while the town of Halifax and the historic town of York were used for outdoor and interior scenes, respectively. Moving on to Happy Valley, the gripping BBC crime drama set in the town of Hebden Bridge, we see the stunning countryside of Yorkshire play a vital role. Many of the show’s outdoor scenes were filmed in Hebden Bridge and the surrounding countryside, while the historic town of Halifax provided the backdrop for some of the interior scenes. Our next BBC drama is a fan favourite but although Peaky Blinders is set in the city of Birmingham, the hit television series was actually filmed in a variety of locations throughout the UK, including in the county of Yorkshire. The production crew made use of various sites in the region, including the city of Leeds and the town of Keighley. In Leeds, they utilized the historic streets and architecture of the city to bring the 1920s era of the show to life. Meanwhile, in Keighley, the crew transformed an old textile mill into a set for the show’s gritty industrial scenes. Yorkshire’s stunning landscapes and architecture served as the perfect backdrop for Peaky Blinders’ dark and dramatic storylines, and helped to transport viewers back in time to the turbulent years of post-World War I Britain.
The BBC aren’t the only British filming institute to film in Yorkshire, Emmerdale, the beloved British soap opera that has been on air since 1972, is filmed every week on location in Yorkshire. The Woolpack pub, a central location in the show, is filmed in the village of Esholt, near Bradford. Additionally, the Emmerdale Village set is located on the Harewood Estate in Leeds. Another ITV special, Victoria, the popular ITV period drama about Queen Victoria’s early years on the throne, was also filmed in various locations in Yorkshire. The historic town of York was the main filming location, serving as the backdrop for many exterior scenes, while the picturesque village of Harewood was used as the exterior of Buckingham Palace.
Although Harry Potter was not primarily filmed in Yorkshire, Malham Cove managed to make an appearance in the filming of The Deathly Hallows Part 1! Malham Cove is a natural limestone formation located in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and has become a popular filming location due to its stunning and unique backdrop. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Malham Cove was used to depict the bleak and desolate landscape of the fictional wizarding world. The imposing limestone cliff and the rugged terrain surrounding it helped to create an eerie and foreboding atmosphere, perfectly capturing the tone of the film. The natural beauty of Malham Cove, coupled with its otherworldly appearance, made it an ideal filming location for one of the most popular film franchises of all time.
Apart from these filming locations, other popular TV and film locations in Yorkshire’s countryside include the village of Goathland, used for the TV series Heartbeat, and the historic town of Ripon, used for the TV series All Creatures Great and Small. You can also visit the town of Skipton, used in the film Den of Thieves, and the village of Marsden, used in the film Love at Sunset Terrace.
