Black Joy Weekend
at Cedar Court Huddersfield
Black Joy Weekend at Cedar Court Huddersfield is an annual August Bank Holiday celebration created to bring people together through great food, music, connection and shared moments of joy.
Hosted in partnership with Black Joy Events & Entertainment, the weekend has grown from a small gathering of friends into a much-loved annual event that welcomes guests from across the region and beyond.
Each year, the weekend brings together a mix of celebration and community, typically including a formal evening event and a more relaxed daytime gathering. While the exact details may vary from year to year, the heart of Black Joy Weekend stays the same: creating a welcoming space where people can come together, celebrate and enjoy each other’s company.
The Story Behind Black Joy Weekend
Black Joy Events & Entertainment was created by a group of friends working together to provide an alternative space for fun and entertainment in the north of England over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
The annual Black Joy Weekend began in 2017 when one of the group moved from London to Huddersfield. Over the bank holiday weekend, friends from London would travel up for a get-away, with the gathering taking place in the garden of the friend living in Huddersfield. Local people would join in too, and over time the event continued to grow.
By 2022 and 2023, those August Bank Holiday gatherings were attracting more than 40 people. As the event grew, it became clear that moving from a back garden to a proper venue would create a better experience for everyone, with the space, catering and facilities to host the weekend properly.
That next chapter is what makes Black Joy Weekend at Cedar Court Huddersfield so special. It keeps the original spirit of the event while giving guests the setting, comfort and hospitality to enjoy the weekend together.
What Does Black Joy Mean?
Black Joy is not about race or ethnicity. It is about finding positive nourishment within yourself and with others in a space that feels safe, uplifting and healing.
While the concept of Black Joy has historical roots in freedom, relief and release from oppression, it has grown to represent something wider: happiness, togetherness and triumph over adversity.
In simple terms, Black Joy Weekend is about creating space for people to feel good, connect, celebrate and enjoy life regardless of who they are.
What To Expect
Black Joy Weekend usually takes place over the August Bank Holiday weekend and is designed to bring people together in a relaxed, feel-good atmosphere.
Depending on the year’s programme, guests can expect a mix of great food, music, dancing, conversation and community. The weekend often includes a more formal evening celebration alongside a relaxed daytime social event.
It is a chance to dress up, let your hair down, enjoy good company and be part of an event that has grown through friendship, shared energy and a genuine sense of togetherness.
